Livelihood Program of Caritas Pakistan Karachi organized the Training of Trainers on Kitchen gardening for the community members of the Archdioceses of Karachi

The livelihood program of Caritas Pakistan Karachi organized the Training of Trainers on Kitchen gardening for the community members of the Archdioceses of Karachi on 20th of March, 2010 at Franciscan Friary for the post vegetable cultivation method.In which 40 Community members both male and female from different areas and Caritas Pakistan Karachi Animators were participated.  

Mr. Mansha Noor focal person for Livelihood program of Caritas Pakistan Karachi welcomed to the entire participated specially Rev. Victor John (OFM) Parish priest St. Philips parish, Mr. Dominic Gill executive Secretary, Caritas Pakistan Karachi, Mr. Mumtaz Bashir Livelihood program Coordinator (Caritas Pakistan Hyderabad) and today facilitator, members from the community and animators.  He also shared the aim and objectives of the training workshop which were to impart knowledge of kitchen gardening practices among the women and to promote production of healthy vegetable for self-consumption and eat chemical- free vegetable to improve the health and nutrition of those who cannot afford pricey basic commodities.

Mr. Dominic Gill executive Secretary Caritas Pakistan Karachi in his key note address said that he had initially resisted embarking on the kitchen gardening program to start in Karachi. But I am very much empress about the positive feed back of the beneficiaries those ware able to save between the Rs.2000 to 3000 per month and eat the fresh and chemical free vegetables. They further said that habits of cultivating the different vegetables at home are increased among the women and male members in the areas of Animators. He said through Kitchen gardening program we can overcome our food shortages and to address the rising price of daily-use vegetables.

Mr. Mumtaz Bashir Bhatti Livelihood Coordinator said that the objective of the post vegetable methods were to community women empowerment, water conservation, nutrient requirement of the body, climate change relationship and to avoid chemicals use organic food.  He said that in 3 fits area through post vegetable method we can grow 5 to 7 different vegetables at home. Through this method we also save the water because in this method less water required for the vegetables to grow. 

After that all the participants were participated to learn the method of the post vegetable cultivation. They mixed the soil and mud and prepared the post vegetable model and Fr. Victor John and Mr. Dominic Gill sown the seeds of the different vegetables in the  model of post vegetable cultivation.

Fr Victor John (OFM) Parish Priest of St. Philip’s Parish in his remarks said that first I am thanks Caritas Pakistan Karachi and its livelihood program to organize the Kitchen gardening training workshop for our community members, he said that St Francis Assisi was the priest of nature he loved natural environments flowers, trees vegetables, fruits and all kind of the thing in the environment for the beauty of the earth. He asked the Ayab Goth members that they must be grow this vegetables at their home and also inform other members of the community because our Church and School in the name of the St. Francis Assisi who loved the nature and environment very much. 





Fr. Victor John distributed the seeds of 7 different vegetable among the participants area vise and said that you must grow these seeds in your home and also distributed to other member’s o the community.

After distribution of the seeds all the participants were divided into group to make their plan of action with their animators. All the participants prepared their plan of action and shared with all the presented on the chats. They target to distribute seeds to 103 families and aware them about the benefits of the kitchen gardening.
