UK Christians being 'marginalised'
UK: May 05, 2010, (PCTV Newsdesk)Christians in the UK are being subjected to an increasing amount of persecution and marginalisation, Christian Today has reported. Speaking during a popular Christian event in Eastbourne, church leaders explained that new equality laws, originally designed to promote fairness, have contributed to a loss of religious freedom.
Among the topics discussed during the conference was the recent court case involving relationship councillor Gary McFarlane, who lost his job because of his Christian beliefs. According to the bishop of Lewes, Rev Wallace Benn, the Church of England must do more to help protect civil freedoms and combat the growing secularist movement in the UK.
"We need to know what our heritage is, encourage people to return to it and encourage Christians to be informed and stand up and be counted - graciously, but clearly and firmly," he added.
A number of prominent religious leaders have called on the government to defend the discrimination against Christians in the workplace. Earlier this year, a selection of current and former bishops wrote to the Sunday Telegraph to express their views on a number of recent court cases involving Christians.
