A harsh punishment for the wrestler Fathi Noreen for refusing to confront an Israeli in support of Palestine

The International Olympic Committee issued a heavy penalty against Algerian wrestler Fathi Norine and his coach Ammar Benkhlef, against the background of his withdrawal from facing the Israeli Tohar Botbol in the “Tokyo 2022” Olympics.

Fathi Noureen and his coach, Ammar bin Yakhlef, were deprived of all official competitions for ten years, according to the website “”Sunrise“.

Noreen had announced his withdrawal from judo competitions in the weight of under 73 kg, after he was drawn against the Sudanese Muhammad Abdul Rasoul, in the first round, with the possibility of meeting in the second round the Israeli wrestler Tohar Potbol.

Noreen said in statements to Algerian media, after the draw, at the time: “The decision to withdraw is irreversible… We are in solidarity with the Palestinian cause.”

He added: “My withdrawal is in support of Palestine. My position is firm. I reject normalization in all its forms, even if it cost me that absence from the Olympic Games, God will compensate us.”

At that time, the International Judo Federation decided to suspend the Algerian wrestler and his coach, withdraw their accreditation in the Olympics, and return them to Algeria, with an in-depth investigation into the case.

The International Judo Federation published a statement on its official website at the time, confirming that this initial penalty was issued before a final and official penalty was issued following the meeting of its disciplinary committee after the end of the Olympic Games.

And the International Federation continued in its statement: “Nourin and his coach Ammar Benkhlef announced to the media to withdraw. This position is completely contrary to the philosophy of the International Judo Federation, which has a strict policy on discrimination and the promotion of solidarity as a basic principle, which is reinforced by the values of judo.”
