After a report on an alleged affair with the wife of the co-founder of Google, a look at Elon Musk’s chaotic world

New York, USA (CNN)–As soon as we say that Elon Musk may keep his head down to focus on running several of his companies, fight a high-risk legal battle with Twitter, or spend time with any of his 10 children, a new scandal emerges to feed Hurricane around the richest person in the world.

In case you missed it, The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk had a brief affair with Nicole Shanahan, wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who happened to be friends with Musk and once gave him half a million dollars to support Tesla.

According to the newspaper, this short relationship prompted Brin to file for divorce.

Musk called the report “nonsense” in a tweet on Monday, adding: “I work crazy hours, so there’s not much time for covert maneuvers and deception.”

Why does that matter?

It may not matter much who Musk decides to have a relationship with, but the reason for this is that The Wall Street Journal and many media outlets believe it is important to shine a light on the world’s most powerful and wealthy.

As the CEO of Tesla, the world’s most valuable automaker, Musk is the man behind the wheel when it comes to the future of fully electric and self-driving cars. As the head of SpaceX, he has sent humans into space and hopes to one day colonize Mars. Neuralink wants to develop a computer chip that can be implanted into the human brain.

You wouldn’t have ambitions of this magnitude without facing some scrutiny of your character. This scrutiny has so far raised many doubts about Musk’s behavior:

Musk was accused of harassing a SpaceX flight attendant, which he denied.

One of his sons publicly disowned him.

A former Tesla employee is suing him, arguing that the company fosters a climate of sexual harassment.

There are also reports that Tesla paid a company to monitor employee interactions on Facebook when some workers wanted to form an association.

The conclusion

CEOs of publicly traded companies are public figures, and the way they conduct their personal affairs provides insight into the way they run their companies.

According to The Wall Street Journal, when Brin learned of Musk’s alleged betrayal, the Google co-founder told his advisors to sell all of his financial investments in Musk’s companies. It is unclear how much of these investments were made or if the sale actually took place. But this is exactly the kind of personal and professional collision that should make shareholders uncomfortable.
