Argentine Lionel Messi sent a message to Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich striker, who finished second in the Ballon d’Or race as the best player in the world for 2021.
The Argentine star, Paris Saint-Germain, won the Golden Ball presented by the famous French magazine “France Football”, in a ceremony held on Monday in Paris, for the seventh time in its history.
The Polish star won the award for the best striker.
Messi said after receiving the award at the ceremony: “It is unbelievable to be here again, two years ago I thought it would be my last award, then now I am here again.”
He added, “I think that this award is exceptional after the achievement we achieved in the Copa America, which was also exceptional, and we achieved a long-awaited dream. I think winning the Copa America is an achievement for the Argentina team as a whole, and I would like to share this award with my teammates, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.”
As for Lewandowski, Messi said: “It is a great honor for me to be a contender for the award, and I believe that he deserves to be among the best and to win the Ballon d’Or.”
Messi insisted that if the Ballon d’Or had been held as scheduled last year, rather than canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lewandowski would have been the unanimous choice to win it.
He also stressed the need for the prize organizers, France Football, to hand over Lewandowski the 2020 prize in recognition of his achievements.
And he added, addressing Lewandowski: “I hope France Football will give you the Ballon d’Or 2020, we all think you deserve it and I hope you can get it.”
In comments published by the English newspaper “Mirror”, Messi said about the Egyptian star, who came in seventh place: “Mohamed Salah will have opportunities in the coming years, both players (Salah and Lewandowski) are at their best at the moment, and they will have greater chances to win them.” .
The Argentine added: “It has been a great year for Lewandowski, as a distinguished striker and a great scorer, and perhaps he will win the award next year, especially since he is at a good club.”
Messi scored 38 goals and made 14 assists in the Barcelona shirt last season and led the team to the King’s Cup title and qualification for the European Champions League.
The 34-year-old also consolidated this success with the Catalan giants by leading his country to the Copa America title, the first major international title for Argentina in 28 years.
