The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center reported today that astronauts Abdullah Al Hammadi and Saleh Al Ameri are preparing for the first Emirati space simulation mission in November.
The center pointed out that the two astronauts are currently completing sports exercises in Russia, and others on docking of vehicles with the International Space Station. They also conduct exercises about driving an explorer on the moon, as well as psychological tests, medical exams, and Russian language tests.
Abdullah Al Hammadi and Saleh Al Ameri are the first Emirati astronauts to participate in the Emirates Space Simulation Project (Mission No. 1), as part of the international scientific research program at the unique ground station “Sirius” 20/21, which extends for eight months, in the ground experimental complex, in The Institute of Medical and Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, whose mission will be to study the psychological and physiological effects of isolation on humans, and team dynamics, to help prepare for long-term space exploration missions.
The center chose Abdullah Al Hammadi and Saleh Al Ameri out of 172 applicants to participate in the mission. The process of selecting candidates for the mission relied on several factors, as the applicants underwent rigorous evaluation processes, in line with the best international standards, and the percentage of female citizens applying to participate in the competition was 62% of the candidates who They applied for the assignment, and the list of preferred occupations for candidates included physicians, medical researchers, physiologists, biologists, life support specialists, and IT and electronics experts.
