Algeria issues a statement regarding its position on the gas agreements with Spain

The statement added that Algeria denounce the reaction European Union On the crisis between Algeria and Spain without prior consultation with the Algerian government.

On Wednesday, Algeria suspended the “Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation” concluded in 2002 with Spain, after Madrid changed its position on Western Sahara.

In a joint statement, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and Commission Vice President in charge of trade Valdis Dombrovskis called the decision “extremely worrying”.

The statement added, “We are assessing the repercussions of the Algerian measures”, in particular the instructions issued to financial institutions “to stop transactions between the two countries, which appear to violate the Association Agreement between the European Union and Algeria, especially in the field of trade and investment.”

The two European officials confirmed after a meeting in Brussels with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albaristhat “this would lead to discriminatory treatment of a member state of the European Union and prejudice the exercise of the Union’s rights under the Convention”.

They suggested that the European Union “is prepared to oppose any kind of coercive measures applied to a member state.”

For its part, Algeria expressed Friday evening its dissatisfaction with “the European Commission rushing to make a position without prior consultation or any investigation with the Algerian government.”

Algeria’s mission to the European Union expressed its regret that the Commission “did not verify” that “Algeria’s suspension of a bilateral political treaty with a European partner, in this case Spain, does not directly or indirectly affect its obligations contained in the Association Agreement between Algeria and the European Union.”

The Algerian mission added, in a statement in French, that “regarding the government’s alleged measure to stop current transactions with a European partner, it exists only in the minds of those who call for it and those who quickly denounce it.”

Algeria also denied any disturbance in the delivery Gas To Spain, the statement stated, “Algeria has previously made it clear through the President of the Republic that it will continue to fulfill all the commitments it has undertaken in this context, provided that the concerned commercial companies fulfill all their obligations contained in the contracts.”
