Representative Lauren Poubert, a member of the US House of Representatives, refused to apologize to her colleague Ilhan Omar for a “joke” that used insulting terms against Muslims.
This comes against the backdrop of widespread controversy raised by Colorado State Representative Lauren Poubert, with a sarcastic comment on her meeting with Ilhan Omar in an elevator inside the Capitol Building.
Commenting on the incident, Poubert said in her state’s speech on the incident: “I said (to myself) OK, (Ilhan) doesn’t have a backpack (you mean explosives), everything should be fine. We had to go up one floor. The jihadi squad decided to go to work today.”
“You can rest assured that I will fearlessly continue to put America first, and will not sympathize with terrorists,” Poubert said in a statement.
Last week, however, Poubert apologized to “anyone in the Muslim community she offended,” however, she refused to apologize directly to Representative Ilhan Omar.
Poubert described Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar in a video clip circulating as “part of the so-called Jihad squad”, and also hinted that the Muslim MP may have been carrying explosives, when she met her previously inside an elevator.
It is noteworthy that Ilhan Omar, in turn, published a tweet calling on the leadership of the House of Representatives to take the “appropriate action” against Republican Representative Poubert.
She added that “legitimizing this intolerance not only puts my life at risk, but also puts the lives of all Muslims at risk.”
Ilhan Omar called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy to “take the required measures” against what she described as “intolerance that threatens not only my life but the lives of all Muslims.”
For its part, the leaders of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives, led by Pelosi, indicated in a joint statement that the apology offered by Poibert is not sufficient, calling on the Republican Representative to drop her comments and refrain from such statements in the future.
The Democratic statement condemned McCarthy and Republican Party leaders for their “failure to condemn intolerant and inflammatory rhetoric by members of their own party.”
