Anne Katherine Berg is always the heroine of the story.
A dramatic qualification wrote the rise of the Chelsea women’s team to the semi-finals of the Champions League, after beating Lyon, the defending champion, on penalties, after the two-legged matches ended in a 2-2 draw.
The qualifying champion was par excellence Anne-Catherine Berg, Chelsea goalkeeper, after she saved two penalties from Wendy Renner and Lindsay Horan, French Lyon players, to end the shots with a score of 4-3.
The 33-year-old Berge knows the role well since she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer while playing for West Ham United in 2017.
It took 76 days for her treatment, and she returned to playing football again, after which she appeared in the formation of the best in the English Women’s League, “Super League”.
In 2019, the German moved to Chelsea, won the Golden Glove Award for the English Women’s League with the Blues, and crowned the team with the league championship three times in a row, the last of which was the previous season.
And at a moment when she began to be stable in Berg’s life, she was surprised by the disease again, and she announced before the start of the season that she had renewed cancer after four years of full recovery.
Chelsea announced at the time in a statement, “Everyone at the club is behind you at this difficult time, and we will provide any support to help you recover quickly.”
With the start of the new season, a month after announcing her cancer again, Berge participated naturally with Chelsea in all tournaments, as she played 19 matches this season and kept clean sheets in 10 of them.
She was also nominated this season for the award for the best goalkeeper in the world, but she did not win it, but went to Marie Erbes, goalkeeper of Manchester United and England.
Championship roles represented by Berg since the beginning of her cancer, continued with the leadership of Chelsea Women to the semi-finals to face Barcelona on April 23 and 29 of the same month.
It is noteworthy that Lyon is the title holder of the previous version of the European Women’s Champions League, and he is also the historical champion of the tournament by 8 times.
