One of the damage to the bus
Argentine fans accidentally threw stones at their team’s bus, Atletico Tigre, on their way to Brazil’s Copa Sudamericana group game against Sao Paulo on Thursday.
In light of a history of intense disagreements between the two teams after the controversial final of the 2012 championship, the police were heavily deployed in preparation for the confrontation, which Sao Paulo won 2-0.
Agustin Cardozo, the Tigre midfielder, announced the incident on Instagram, and posted a picture of a stone he was holding in his hands with a broken window in the background, accompanied by an annotation saying, “We.”
Although he later deleted the post, Argentine media platform TYC broadcast videos of the damage to the bus.
In the 2012 final, Sao Paulo was leading 2-0 and won after the referee canceled the match in the second half due to the refusal of the Tigre players to go onto the field.
Former coach Nestor Gorosito was among those who said that the Argentine team decided not to play the second half because the security forces beat them with sticks and even threatened them with weapons between the two halves in the match that was held at Morumbi Stadium in Brazil.
There was no investigation or suspension after the match.
Sao Paulo will face rivals Tigre at home on June 27 in the last match of Group D.
