Arsenal ceded a two-goal lead, tied 2-2 with homeowner Liverpool, and survived a loss in the last moments, but lost two valuable points in the struggle for the English Premier League title today, Sunday.
Arsenal was on its way to consolidate its lead in the league by eight points from Manchester City, but it is now six points ahead of the defending champions, who have one deferred match, in addition to an expected confrontation between the two teams.
Gabriel Martinelli led Arsenal with a goal after eight minutes, and Gabriel Jesus added the second goal with a header in the 28th minute.
Mohamed Salah narrowed the difference to the hosts by following a ball from close range three minutes before the break, but in the second half he missed the opportunity to equalize and hit a penalty kick completely outside the goal.
But three minutes before the end of normal time, substitute Roberto Firmino headed home from close range after a Trent Alexander-Arnold pass.
And in stoppage time, Salah missed a dangerous opportunity from close range, then fired a perfect shot from the right side, which goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdell turned into a corner kick, and his teammate Ibrahima Konate missed an opportunity with his chest as well.
Arsenal lead with 73 points from 30 matches, followed by City, the defending champions, with 67 points from 29 matches.
Liverpool has 44 points in eighth place, but it suffered a new blow in its quest to be in the golden square and qualify for the Champions League next season, as it is 12 points behind Manchester United, fourth in the standings, who played 29 games.
