Astronaut Thomas Pesquet describes to Macron the climate damage on Earth

In a video chat from the International Space Station on Thursday, November 04, 2021, astronaut Thomas Pesquet described French President Emmanuel Macron’s climate damage to Earth from his observations from space during his second orbital mission.

“Do you really see the consequences of climate disruption, are there tangible effects?” the French president asked his compatriot Pesquet from his office at the Elysee Palace.

“Unfortunately, yes, Mr. President,” replied the astronaut in zero-gravity orbit. From the window of the space station we clearly see the fragility of the Earth, the oasis with limited resources, the negative effects of human activities and the pollution of rivers and the atmosphere.

Thomas Pesquet is scheduled to return to Earth in the next few days, but the exact date has not yet been announced. “We saw entire regions burning, Canada or California covered in a cloud of smoke, we saw fires with the naked eye at an altitude of 400 km, and the same thing in southern France, Greece and the Mediterranean basin,” he added.

Macron also asked, “Have you noticed any development compared to the previous mission?”, Pesquet replied, “Yes, these weather phenomena are accelerating at an alarming rate.”

Pesquet ended his speech by saying, “I hope that the necessary measures will be taken to keep the planet habitable for all,” offering the French president a new conversation during his next space mission.

Macron concluded that “the commitments must be carried forward and implemented much more quickly. This is the goal of COP26 and what we are all trying to do at the national, regional and European level.”
