Including the arrival of Mercury to its maximum elongation… and the Earth’s occurrence at the farthest point around the sun

The Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at King Abdulaziz University has issued a calendar of the most prominent astronomical events for the month of July 2021.

The head of the Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at the university, Dr. Hassan Muhammad Asiri, said that among these events is the arrival of the planet Mercury to its western maximum elongation, where the planet is located at its highest point above the horizon, and is visible to the east just before sunrise, and the maximum elongation is an appropriate opportunity and time. Suitable for planet monitoring.

He added: “The Earth is located at the aphelion, which is the farthest point in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The Earth revolves around the Sun in an elliptical orbit. The Sun is located at one of its foci. The point closest to the Sun is called the perihelion. On the other hand, in the same month, Mars is at its aphelion. While Mercury is at perihelion.

“Asiri” indicated that the calendar includes a number of conjunctions between the Moon on the one hand and Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn separately on the other, adding that the conjunction occurs between two celestial bodies that are apparently close to each other when they are located on the same celestial longitude.

The calendar included a distinctive coupling between the planets Venus and Mars, where the angular distance between them reaches half a degree, and the phenomenon of coupling can be seen with the naked eye, while through the telescope it is possible to monitor the two planets in the same field of view.
