Few are the great players in the 21st century who have remained loyal throughout their lives to one club, and among them, Spaniard Sergio Busquets, who announced his departure from La Liga leaders Barcelona yesterday at the end of the season, at the age of 34.
The player, crowned with the Catalan club with three titles in a competition in the Champions League, published a video clip on his account on “Instagram”, in which he said: “Hello fans. The time has come to announce that this is my last season with Barcelona. “It was an honor, a dream and a source of pride to defend this shirt and represent it for many years, and it meant everything.”
In 15 professional seasons in Catalonia, the son of the city of Sabadell (Catalonia) has won 31 titles so far and is a few days away from winning the 32nd title, as Barcelona leads the Spanish League, 13 points behind its direct chaser Atletico Madrid, five stages before the end of the season.
Busquets joined Barcelona’s youth ranks in 2005, before making his debut in the Spanish League in 2008 and continued with him for 15 seasons, during which he won the European Champions League in 2009, 2011 and 2015, and eight titles in La Liga, seven in the King’s Cup and the same in the local Super Cup, and three World Cups for Clubs and the same in the European Super Cup.
“It was an unforgettable journey,” Carles’ son, the Catalan club’s goalkeeper in the 1990s, added. Since I was a kid I have come here to watch the matches or watch them on TV. I have always dreamed of playing in this shirt and in this stadium, and the reality has exceeded all my dreams.” And he added, “I would not have believed you if you had told me when I arrived as a young player that I would play 15 seasons in the best club in the world. The club of my life, which I was and will always be a fan, member, player and leader, and exceeded (playing) 700 matches.
