Injury problems continued in the Italian national team, as captain Giorgio Chiellini became the latest player to withdraw from the squad, ahead of two crucial matches in the qualifying matches for the Qatar World Cup 2022.
Doubts were swirling about the participation of the European champion captain in the last two crucial matches in the qualifiers against Switzerland and Northern Ireland, but the Italian Federation said that the veteran defender left the team’s training camp, yesterday, Wednesday.
Chiellini’s absence represents a major blow before the match against Rome on Friday, against the Swiss team, who are chasing the “Azzurri”, the leaders of Group C, and are behind them on a goal difference only, with two matches remaining for both teams.
Italy and Switzerland are the only two teams competing in Group C for the first place, which guarantees direct qualification to the World Cup to be held in Qatar between November and December of next year.
Italy will play in the last round against Northern Ireland in Belfast, next Monday, while Switzerland will conclude its matches by hosting Bulgaria at the same time.
The Italian national team had suffered a strong blow in the absence of striker Ciro Immobile, with a calf injury, and also lost the efforts of Roma midfielders, Nicolo Zaniolo, and Lorenzo Pellegrini, due to injury as well, while coach Roberto Mancini is also awaiting the fate of Inter midfielder, Nicolo Parilla, who missed Tuesday’s training.
