Kerry says world economies can benefit from renewable energy
US climate envoy John Kerry said President Joe Biden is considering declaring a climate emergency.
This step would give Biden additional powers that would enable him to implement his program on renewable energies, which was delayed due to the lack of support in Congress (Parliament).
Kerry said in a statement to the BBC that the conditions are not ideal, because the idea does not have broad support in Congress.
But he added that no one is more committed than President Biden to replacing carbon-based energy.
He noted that recent Supreme Court decisions undermining the government’s climate policies have not made the job easier.
Climate change increases the risk of exposure to dry and hot weather, which leads to fires.
The Earth has warmed by about 1.1 degrees Celsius since the beginning of the industrial era, and temperatures are expected to continue rising unless governments around the world decide to cut emissions.
Over the past week, tens of millions of Americans – in more than 20 states – have lived amid warnings of rising temperatures.
But Biden’s bid to pass a climate change law received a blow earlier this month when Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia said he would not vote for the bill.
On Wednesday, Biden announced $2.3 billion to build facilities that can withstand extreme heat and natural disasters.
But he has not declared a climate emergency, despite calls from Democrats and environmental groups.
Kerry said the world is now learning that clean energy has lowered inflation and energy costs, created jobs, and improved health and security conditions.
He added that Biden was prepared to “use whatever tool is available to him” to confront climate change, including presidential orders.
