Russian scientists have announced that they have cloned the country’s first cow, modifying its genes in hopes of producing hypoallergenic milk.
Scientists at the Skoltech Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow point out that the cloned cow is very healthy and growing very fast, according to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”.
They also confirmed that they had succeeded in modifying her genes so that humans would not produce the protein “beta-lactoglobulin” that causes “lactose malabsorption” or “lactose sensitivity”.
According to Peter Sergeev, co-author of the study, although genetically modified mice are a very common phenomenon, it is very difficult to modify other organisms, due to the high costs and difficulties of breeding and reproduction.
“Cloning a cow is really just a test,” Sergeev said. If we succeed in achieving the goal of lactose-free natural milk, we will clone dozens of genetically modified cows for this purpose. ”
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases reports that nearly 70 percent of the world’s population suffers from some form of lactose malabsorption, which makes it difficult to digest milk and other dairy products.
