Former Manchester City star Sergio Aguero rushed to the defense of Argentine compatriot Lionel Messi, after the Paris Saint-Germain star was criticized for his poor performance in the 1-0 win over Real Madrid.
Messi, 34, got only three out of 10 ratings by the French newspaper “L’Equipe” for his “worrisome” poor performance after he missed an exciting penalty against Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the first leg of the 16th round of the Champions League last Tuesday.
Speaking directly to RMC Sport, Aguero said: “Messi did very well, not because he is my friend, but his level was very good, but he was unlucky in the penalty kick.”
Aguero said that he canceled an interview with one of the media in France because of his criticism of Messi after the match, which ended with Paris Saint-Germain winning with a clean goal, scored by Kylian Mbappe.
Aguero continued: “French magazines and newspapers killed him with criticism, they are a group of loafers, I was going to Paris, I had an interview with one of the magazines, but I canceled it and told them to stop criticizing Messi.”
The French newspaper did not retreat from his criticism, even admitting its grief over his suffering since he left Barcelona for Paris last summer, and said: “It is sad to see him like this with Paris Saint-Germain.”
Messi has scored just seven goals in 21 appearances for his French club this season and has struggled to settle in Paris.
