World number one Novak Djokovic began his journey towards a sixth title at the ATP Finals by defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud 7-6, 6-2 in Turin on Monday.
Djokovic faltered at the start and lost the first game, but recovered to control the rhythm against Rudd, who made his debut in the ATP Finals after claiming five championships this season.
The Serbian player said: “It was a strange match, I hit good forehands and attacked the net and advanced comfortably, then I fell back and dropped my racket and lost my serve.”
He added, “The conditions are difficult here, and if you lose your serve it will be difficult to recover, but I managed to survive and I am happy with the way I controlled the match.”
Ruud’s powerful forehands helped resist Djokovic for most of the first set, but he lost the tiebreak after the 20-times Grand Slam champion forced the 22-year-old Norwegian to make several errors.
Djokovic easily prevailed in the second set and broke in the first game and dominated the ball exchange, while Rudd stumbled before losing after one hour and 31 minutes.
Djokovic later received an award for his record number of rankings for the seventh year, beating Pete Sampras’s record of 14 Grand Slam titles.
“I was four or five years old when I saw Sampras playing at Wimbledon for the first time, I ordered a racket and fell in love with tennis, so it’s amazing to set the record now after Pete.”
World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas will meet Russian Andrey Rublev on Monday in another match in the green group.
