“A man speaks in Monaco and a man hears him in London, it is the end”; With this short sentence, a British newspaper commented on the arrival of the first audio broadcast over the air to London. Now, more than a hundred years after the “alleged end” that the newspaper talked about; Do we still bear the same surprise whenever we look at science with a new development? Why do we always fascinate and admire a new invention, and with time it becomes so ordinary?
The truth is that when a new scientific breakthrough is discovered, the tools available are often less able to measure it and know its applications. For example, when the German physicist Hertz observed electromagnetic waves in practice, he commented: “I do not think it will have any practical application. It is just proof that the electromagnetic waves that Maxwell talked about exist, although they cannot be seen.” In fact, he discovered one of the greatest inventions in history that opened the door to wireless communications as one of the foundations of the civilization we live in today.
We wonder, why did high-added scientific conquests increase in the past compared to our present era? It is a question to which the answer lies in the fact that the scientific method has reached a stage of construction in which the cumulative has become more important than others. Evolution has become gradual and difficult to feel, as each stage builds on the previous one so that the increase is imperceptible to the average person. Giant inventions find that thousands of scientists around the world have contributed to their foundation, and some of them did not communicate with each other at all, but the scientific method was the medium; It is the estuary in which achievements gather to bring out to us something whose greatness humanity has not seen before. This is the basis of civilization and scientific progress that we are living in now, and it is a civilization different from what preceded it, distinguished by the fact that everyone is a contributor to its development and prosperity from the farthest jungles of the African continent, to the middle of Manhattan in America.
Have we reached the top yet? This broad basis from the previous contributions, makes each contribution, no matter how great, so small in size that some feel that science has reached its peak and a decline must begin. The truth is the opposite. Science has no coast and we have been given only a little of it, so no matter how advanced we reach, we will never reach the end. This is from the greatness of human knowledge, as it is limited as a quantity, but it cannot be encompassed. In short, we can say that we have reached a high stage of development, and the new additions do not touch us directly and dazzlingly, as in the past.
Do we have the right to say that science is saturated and there are no longer any tangible additions to humans? Do we stop and be satisfied, or is there still a long way to go? Are our current tools sufficient to judge a future that we do not see?
It remains for us to return to the words that the British newspaper commented on the radio’s operation as the end… Why is the world always waiting for the end?
