DRBNA HISTORIČKA: drive carefully, clean everywhere, order. A café on Budweis Square was a gossip historian | Bodzhka we trained

As the name suggests, a portion of our coaching historian was donated by Jan Chinku to Julius Meinl Café. The first store is located at the corner of the square and Krajinská, then the second store was opened on U Černé věže Street. Do you know when the first roasters were opened in Budejovice? And the first independent coffee shop?

In a photo from September 11, 1925, from the archives of the Flashk family, the staff of the Julius Meinl Café branch of the photographer are gathered. It was a shop in a house on the corner of Krajinska Square. Managed carefully and everywhere clean and order. On the left is a business manager watching a photographer. Yaroslav Flashk is standing at the table next to the scale, he is not looking at the photographer. After training at Meinl’s, Vlášků bought a café and coffee roaster in Rudolfovská, as well as U Vlášků’s lodge in a house on the corner of Lipinska. Later, until their nationalization, they settled in Praska.

It is not known exactly when Meinl appeared in the city, it was around 1900. In the 1930s, when the city was very crowded and smoky, Meinl opened a second store on U Černé věže. Little is known that Julius Meinl was born into a baker’s family on April 10, 1824 in Kraslets, trained in Prague as an uncle of a paint shop and died on December 24, 1914. Since 1954 he was in Vienna at am Graben, Julius Meinl-Gaze.

Vincennes Brandner arranged one of the first coffee roasters in the Family Square and Theater in 1848. However, it was not just a coffee shop, but a wide variety of colonial and colonial goods. A new tobacco factory has expanded coffee sales in the city. Namely, a properly dense atmosphere is achieved when a cloud of nicotine lazily falls over the cafeteria. Cafes were set up quickly. It’s hard to find, there are no commercial guides, or I don’t have them all. Perhaps the first truly independent café before 1881 was in U Černé růže on Piaristická Street. This is evidenced by a notice from August 1881:

“I consider it an honor to announce to the dedicated public that they will continue to run the café business in the house of U Černé růže after their late husband. With all due respect, Marie Gruberova.” General His own coffee shop on Vídenská Street a year later. The second famous coffee and roasting company on the square was the Prague Karel Kulík Company. That would happen today – I would buy something to eat from Kulíky. But they were no longer there. Karel Kulík was born in 1861 in Pilsen, and died in 1944. He arranged his first store in Prague at Ovusny trh in 1899.

Julius Meinl began selling green coffee beans in Vienna in 1862. He then began roasting on a home stove. He mentions in his diary that he used to burn grain from time to time. Over time, the optimum temperature for coffee roasting was reached in Europe. Coffee is often roasted at 225 ° C, when the beans are medium dark brown. The temperature was used at 230 ° C in Vienna, but the coffee already had a slightly burnt taste, although it was normal for those in Vienna. In France, they were roasted at 240 ° C, which is quite enough, but the coffee was flavored, the bitterness dissolved. Experts can tell by the aroma how many degrees of roasting.

These experts are skeptical about adding rum, milk, and whipped cream to coffee. There is so much to do with coffee. What was agreed upon at the U Černé růže café was correct, and they did not need lawyers. The memory of elementary school jumps, when teachers liked to say that farmers in Brazil were pouring coffee already loaded on ships into the sea.
