Belgium’s Vot van Aert raised his arms before reaching the finish line in the third stage of the Dauphine Cycling on Tuesday but will no doubt be sorry for that after France’s David Godot overtook him to win the stage.
“You have to watch the replay, I raised my arm prematurely and I am really ashamed to lose the stage like that and not finish the job,” the jumbo-visma rider said.
“The victory was in my hands. Back in the day, when I saw shots like that of another contestant, I was amazed. I now feel the same heartbreak.”
But Van Aert took some solace after topping the overall standings ahead of the singles stage against the clock on Wednesday.
