The Ecuadorean national football team qualified for the 2022 World Cup despite its heavy 1-3 defeat against its host Paraguay Thursday evening (Friday morning GMT) in the penultimate seventeenth round of South American qualifiers for the World Cup.

The Ecuadorean national team’s balance froze at 25 points, but it maintained its position in third place in the qualifiers table, with a goal difference only against Uruguay.

Ecuador took advantage of Uruguay’s victory over Peru in another match that was held at the same time to accompany the Uruguay team to the finals, while the conflict between Peru, Colombia and Chile ignited for fifth place and qualified for the world qualifier against the fifth Asian qualifiers.

Paraguay raised its tally to 16 points to advance to eighth place in the qualifiers table, one point ahead of Bolivia, but Paraguay officially lost the opportunity to compete for a World Cup seat before the matches of this round.

Paraguay finished the first half in their favor with two clean goals, scored by Robert Morales in the tenth minute, and Ecuador’s Piero Hincabe by mistake in his team’s goal at the end of the first half.

In the second half, Miguel Almiron scored the third goal for Paraguay in the 54th minute, while Jordi Caicedo scored Ecuador’s only goal from a penalty kick in the 85th minute.

Paraguay finished the match with ten men to send off Blas Riveros in the 88th minute for receiving a second warning in the match.

Ecuador became one of four South American teams to qualify directly for the finals scheduled in Qatar, where it was preceded by Brazil and Argentina, and it was accompanied today by the Uruguay team.

The Ecuadorean national team is participating in the finals for the fourth time in its history, knowing that the best previous result of the team was reaching the second round (the round of sixteen) in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, while it was eliminated from the group stage in the 2002 and 2014 editions.

Uruguay is also participating in the finals for the fourth consecutive time and the fourteenth in its history, knowing that the team won the world title twice in 1930 and 1950.
