Efforts to cross the channel continue and nearly 800 immigrants are coming to the UK

Over the past three days, more than 1,200 immigrants have tried to cross the channel in small boats to reach the UK. About 800 of them were able to reach British territory, while French authorities rescued 482 and sent them back to France.

Between Saturday and Monday, British and British authorities intercepted a total of 1,288 immigrants on the English Channel, a BBC correspondent says, despite reports and measures taken by the United Kingdom to stem the flow of migrants.

On Saturday, October 16, the British Coast Guard rescued 410 people, except 102 on Sunday and 294 on Monday.

On the other hand, 482 migrants in 17 boats were detained by French authorities. It saved 94 people on Saturday, 90 on Sunday and 298 on Monday. The Channel and the North Sea said all migrants were “safe and healthy” and would be taken care of after being rescued by firefighters and border police.

Continuous crossroads and tension between the two countries

Since the end of 2018, the channel crossing towards the United Kingdom has increased, despite continuous warnings, especially due to high traffic, strong currents and low water temperatures.

According to French officials, from the beginning of this year to August about 15,400 immigrants tried to cross the channel, 3,500 of whom were rescued and experienced difficulties when returning to the French coast.

The British government accuses its French counterparts of not using all necessary means to prevent migrant boats from reaching its shores. Faced with an increase in attendance, British Home Secretary Priti Patel threatened not to pay the amount promised by French authorities in September.

Patel provoked a lot of controversy after his statements to take drastic measures to prevent immigrants into the UK. It announced on the English Channel that it would like to exempt border officers from prosecution if immigrants die while being pushed back.

Under international maritime law, border guards must rescue “someone in distress at sea” and face up to two years in prison if they fail to carry out rescue operations.
