DUBAI, March 28th, 2020 (WAM) — The positions of the Arab teams differ in the qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cote d’Ivoire in January 2024, at the end of the third round and before the fourth round, which will start over two days.
The Arab teams hope to repeat the achievement of the previous edition of the same tournament, which witnessed the qualification of 7 Arab teams to the Nations Cup finals in Cameroon, or to surpass it, as that was the largest number of Arab teams to qualify for the tournament throughout its history.
Eight Arab teams are participating in the current African qualifiers, namely Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Sudan and Comoros.
The first and second of the 12 groups who compete in the African qualifiers qualify.
The Moroccan national team is the first to officially qualify for the “Côte d’Ivoire 2024” finals, although it did not play its full matches in the qualifiers, but it benefited from the results of the rest of the teams in its group, which includes South Africa and Liberia, after excluding the Zimbabwean national team, due to the suspension of FIFA, as it topped its group with a score of 6. Points from two matches only.
The Algerian national team joined him after its recent victory over Niger, and raised its points tally to 12 points (full score) at the top of its group, 8 points ahead of its closest competitors, Tanzania.
The same applies to the Tunisian national team, which leads its group with 7 points from 3 matches, and needs to win its next match against the Libyan national team to ensure qualification, regardless of the outcome of the last two matches.
The Libyan national team faces a difficult situation by occupying third place in the group that includes Tunisia and Equatorial Guinea (6 points) and Botswana (1 point), as it has 3 points from 3 matches, and it needs not to give up any point of its upcoming matches to ensure qualification, even as second in the group.
As for the Egyptian national team, it adjusted its position and reached second place in its group with 6 points from 3 matches, behind the leaders Guinea with 9 points from 4 matches, and it has 3 confrontations left against Malawi and Guinea outside its stadium, before it concluded its confrontations in the qualifiers by facing Ethiopia in Cairo.
As for the Sudan national team, it succeeded in adjusting its position with the recent victory over Gabon, and its score increased from points to 6 in second place after playing 4 matches, behind Gabon leaders with 7 points from the same number of matches, and two matches remain for Mauritania at home before going out in the last round to face the Republic Congo.
As for the Comoros national team, which qualified for the first time in its history to the African Nations finals in the last edition in Cameroon 2021, it still clings to hope despite its third place in its group with 3 points from 3 matches behind Zambia 9 and Côte d’Ivoire 7, and it has 3 matches left, where It will host Côte d’Ivoire in the next round, before going out to face Lesotho, and hosting Zambia in the last round.
The Mauritanian national team is similar in the same situation, as it ranks third in its group with 4 points from 3 matches, behind Gabon with 7 points, and Sudan with 6 points, but the last two played more matches.
The Mauritanian national team is waiting to decide its position in its remaining three matches, as it hosts the Congo national team tomorrow, Wednesday, before it is a guest on its Sudanese counterpart in the fifth round in an exclusively Arab confrontation, and finally it hosts Gabon in the last round.
