England’s killer qualifies for the semi-finals of the European Women’s Championship

Georgia Stanway scored a superb goal in extra time to give England a 2-1 win over Spain in an impressive Euro 2022 quarter-final match to send their side to the semi-finals.
The home team almost finished the tournament six minutes before the end, but won in the end to the delight of its fans and set a date in the semi-finals with the winner from Belgium and Sweden.
The match represented European women’s football at its best as the two teams produced a brilliant and fast technical match.
England achieved a victory that will raise optimism that they, led by Dutch coach Sarina Wegmann, will win their first major championship.
There were not many technical differences between the two teams at the beginning of the match, despite the cancellation of a goal for England in the 37th minute through Elaine White for offside.
However, Spain scored the first goal in the 54th minute when Atena del Castillo crossed from the right to Esther Gonzalez, who netted the ball twice.
Del Castillo came close to doubling the score with a powerful shot that was blocked by England goalkeeper Mary Erbs.
But six minutes before the end, England extended the match when substitute Ella Tone scored the equalizer to force the two teams to go into extra time.
The decisive moment came when Stanway found space in the España half and rushed forward before firing a powerful shot from 20 meters past Sandra Banos, the visitors’ goalkeeper, in the 96th minute.
It’s a fantasy, Stanway said. It just shows the level we have reached. We fell a goal behind and got back into the game and made an amazing turnaround. We got the job done and we’ll focus on the semi-final.
England have so far scored 16 goals in the 2022 European Championship, the second largest number of goals in the history of the tournament after Germany in 2009 when they scored 21 goals.
Stanway’s winning goal in extra time holds the 100th for England led by Wegman.
England, favorites to lift the cup at Wembley Stadium, will meet the winner of Belgium and Sweden in their match scheduled for Friday.
