Ethiopian media: Abi Ahmed leads the battles against the “Tigray Front”

Ethiopian official media reported that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed “has arrived at the front” and is leading a counter-attack on the “Tigray Liberation Front” militants.

The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, Fana, said that Abiy Ahmed, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, “is currently leading the counterattack and has been in command of the battles since yesterday” on Tuesday.

The agency added that Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen was carrying out “normal activities”.

It was not clear where Abi Ahmed was, and the state media did not broadcast scenes of him on the ground.

This comes after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front announced this week the control of the Shewa Rubet region, 220 km northeast of Addis Ababa.

Fana had said a few days ago that Abiy’s announcement that he would join the front “inspired many to join the steadfastness campaign.”

And the agency “Agence France Presse” quoted one of the recruits, that he was stunned when he heard that Abe intends to join the soldiers on the battlefield.

He said, “When an official gives up his seat… and his throne, it is to save his country… I cried when he said follow me and went to the front.”

In the fall of 2020, Addis Ababa sent its forces to Tigray to overthrow the regional authorities emanating from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, after the prime minister accused the region’s forces of attacking federal army positions.

The battles in Ethiopia, which is the second most populous African country, have left thousands dead and put hundreds of thousands at risk of starvation, according to the United Nations.
