In a press statement he made this evening, Monday, after the end of the first meeting within the framework of the eighth round of Vienna negotiations on reviving the nuclear agreement, Mora said that the participating parties are working to abolish sanctions against Iran and ensure the country’s commitment to its commitments in the framework of the deal in parallel.
In this context, he stated, “We work on both tracks simultaneously… We do not work in one direction while forgetting or ignoring the other. On the contrary, both tracks reinforce each other.”
“If we work hard in these days and weeks, we will achieve a good result,” the EU official stressed.
Mora declined to specify any exact date for the expected conclusion of the agreement, but he explained: “We are talking about weeks, not months.”
He added that negotiations will be suspended in the first three days of the New Year holidays, but that the participants will return to Vienna by January 3.
On Monday, the eighth round of negotiations under the auspices of the European Union began in Vienna to save the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program in light of the United States’ withdrawal from it in 2018 during the term of its former president, Donald Trump, who imposed painful sanctions on the Iranian side, and the latter responded by reducing its commitments to the deal since 2019.
Officially negotiations are taking place between Iran on one side and Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany on the other, while the United States is participating in the dialogue without engaging in any direct contacts with the Iranian side.
Tehran refuses to negotiate directly with the administration of US President Joe Biden, before lifting sanctions, while Washington insists on the need to advance the principle of step for step.
