The Egyptian Olympic Committee announced the assignment of Olympic champions Faryal Ashraf, a karate player, and Seif Issa, a taekwondo player, to carry the Egyptian flag at the opening ceremony of the Mediterranean Games, which will be held in Oran, Algeria.
The Olympic Committee said in an official statement: “Dr. Abdel Aziz Ghoneim, treasurer of the Egyptian Olympic Committee and head of the Egyptian delegation participating in the Mediterranean Games, announced the selection of Saif Issa and Feryal Ashraf to carry the Egyptian flag at the Mediterranean Games, which will start next Saturday.”
The statement added: “Ghoneim held a meeting with Dr. Al-Basel Abdullah, member of the Olympic Committee’s board of directors and deputy head of the mission, in the presence of Engineer Sherif El-Erian, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, who accompanied the mission from Cairo to Oran.”
He continued, “The meeting was attended by video conference, Engineer Hisham Hatab, President of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, and the names nominated to carry the flag of Egypt were discussed at the opening ceremony, which will be held on Saturday at ten o’clock in the evening, Egypt time.”
He continued, “During the discussions, it was decided to choose Faryal Ashraf, the gold medalist in karate competitions, during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and Saif Issa, the bronze medalist in taekwondo competitions in the same tournament.”
The regulations of the organizing committee for the Mediterranean Games stipulate that the flag of each country shall be carried at the opening ceremony by a player and a player.
It is worth noting that the Egyptian mission arrived in Oran on Thursday afternoon on a private plane, which carried all the members of the mission, as Egypt participates in 19 sports with a mission that includes 183 male and female players.
Seif Issa said on his Facebook page: “Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds. I am very proud of my choice to raise the flag of my country, Egypt, with Olympic champion Ferial Ashraf at the opening ceremony of the Mediterranean Games in Algeria.”
