FilGoal | News | Carrick’s first conference: On Solskjaer’s succession and when did he learn of his dismissal?

Michael Carrick, interim coach of Manchester United, appeared to the media for the first time after assuming the position, at the press conference for Villarreal in the Champions League.

United will visit Villarreal in the fifth round of the Champions League group stage on Tuesday, two days after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked as coach.

“What is on my mind now is the formation of the team against Villarreal, I know the team well,” Carrick said in his first press conference as interim coach of United.

“We have to look forward, not look back, see what I can do to improve.”

“It’s an honor to be in this position, and now my focus is on the next game, I can’t wait.”

Speaking about Solskjaer’s dismissal, Carrick said, “Ole understands that results in a coaching career are everything, and as much as you build a good team, you don’t always get the results you deserve.”

“We’ve worked with Solskjaer for 3 years, and seeing him lose his job has been difficult for me and for a lot of people at this club.”

And the former United player revealed that he did not know about the dismissal of Solskjaer before everyone else, explaining, “I learned about it at the training ground, minutes before the official announcement of the dismissal, I did not know anything before that.”

Manchester United announced the official departure of their Norwegian coach, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on Sunday.

“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United, and we are saddened to have come to this difficult decision,” the club said in a statement.

“The past few weeks have been disappointing, but they shouldn’t erase the work Solskjaer has done over 3 years to build the foundation for long-term success.”

And the club added, “Solskjaer is leaving with our sincere thanks for his effort as coach, and all our best wishes to him for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be preserved, not only as a player but as a wonderful man and coach who gave us so many good moments. He will always be welcome at Old Trafford as part of our The Manchester United family.

The club concluded its statement, “Michael Carrick will lead the team in the upcoming matches, while the club is looking to appoint a temporary coach until the end of the season.”

Solskjaer has won only once in the team’s last 7 league matches, and his last defeat was against Watford 4-1 on Saturday.

And leaves Solskjaer United in seventh place with 17 points.

Solskjaer trained Manchester United on December 19, 2018, as a temporary coach, succeeding the late Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer won 14 of his first 19 matches with the team, to get a 3-year contract as United coach, when he finished sixth in the league.

The following season, Solskjaer United returned to the Champions League by finishing third, for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left the team.

Last season, he finished the league as runners-up to Manchester City and runners-up to the European League after losing to Villarreal on penalties, before his current disastrous season began.
