The officially unannounced duel between the big electric trucks goes to the finals. For now, official sales of the Ford F-150 Lightning are opening, the less visible than the front of the peloton, where it also competes, in addition to this, the Hummer EV, the Rivian R1T and of course the Tesla Cybertruck. More precisely, at first glance, it is almost indistinguishable from the now all-new 14th generation of combustion pick-up trucks, which has long been the best-selling car in the USA across the categories. However, this applies only when viewed from the side, since you will not confuse the specific arc of the electric version completely. After all, customers are said to be satisfied with the conservative look, according to marketing director Jasin Turnbull, they don’t even care about something like a spaceship or a wedge under the door. Perhaps it is not difficult to guess which competitors he has faced.
Tesla will introduce a production version of Cybertruck later this year
Perhaps Mr. Turnbull can make confident statements, because it seems the designers left nothing to chance. Underneath the very traditional coat is an all-new, modern electrical platform, which should be as durable as the conventional one, even if that is, or specifically because it is equipped with a gigantic battery. It will be offered in two capacities, not yet specified, while the smaller (SR) indicates a standard range according to US EPA 370 and the largest (ER) then 483 km. We don’t know yet the values according to WLTP, they can vary greatly. But we already know there will be two performance versions on offer. The weakest offers a total power of 318 kW (433 hp), and the most powerful 420 kW (571 hp). The torque on both versions is the same – 1050 Nm – which means they both use the same device. From the rather sparse technical data published so far, we also cite an acceleration from 0 to 96 km / h, which the weaker version should be able to handle in around five seconds and the strongest in 4.4 seconds. This means, among other things, that the acceleration capabilities are much better than the historically more powerful version of the F-150 Raptor. DC charging can handle as little as 150 kW, then AC will offer the first dual charging option
The transport capacity is also high and not only matches the petrol models, but is also superior to them. It offers a storage space under the hood with a volume of 400 liters and a loading capacity of 181 kg. And not just any; Waterproof, durable and equipped with an electrical outlet up to 2.4 kW, you can turn the F-150 Lightning bracket not only into an impromptu workshop, but also into a field disco, bar or bar with all amenities. And if that was not enough, you can load another 900 kg on the body, the top lines have additional drawers with an output of up to 7.2 kW. This way, you can not only call a large, full garden party, but in case of failure, you can connect the entire house. With an average daily consumption of 30 kWh, this can operate for up to three days (a larger battery capacity has likely been estimated with great success). And you don’t have to worry about getting to the nearest charger; Onboard electronics monitor this, warn you when approaching a critical SoC and turn off the sockets on board. If you have a little light for all of this, the truck will shine in any direction. With a stronger version, you can tow more than 4.5 tons of lever.
Rivian tests the R1T in severe frost. This tests the durability of the batteries
But the electrician’s bestseller can do enough down the road. Above all, the independent management of BlueCruise, whose 160,000 kilometers of US and Canadian highways are said to be ready at the moment. He has enough to know in the field and also offers advanced connectivity on board the Ford Sync 4, captured by a giant freestanding vertical display from the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Longitudinal dynamics must match the Tesle Model 3, while driving comfortably thanks to the car’s independent rear suspension. The car won’t reach customers until spring 2022, so competition can still outpace it, and Rivian, Hummer and Tesla are all preparing to do so. However, Rivian and Hummer will not be able to compete with very favorable Ford pricing.
