France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen protested on Saturday the placing of the European Union flag over the Arc de Triomphe to mark Paris’s six-month presidency.
Decorating the Arc de Triomphe in European Union colors only without the national flag is a real assault on our national identity, because this monument glorifies our military victories and includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
There was no immediate comment from the pro-EU Macron, whom Le Pen accuses of giving a “direct order” to place the flag.
But Secretary of State for European Affairs Clement Bonn said the flag-raising was temporary.
“The French flag has not been replaced,” he wrote on Twitter. “The election campaign is not a free pass for lies and petty arguments.”
Our eyes are on the French future.
We share civilization with Europeans, but our destiny will be adorned with our national colors.
Emmanuel Macron’s imagination about the super-state is outdated and wrong.

Macron has not yet revealed his intention to re-run in the April elections, after he beat Le Pen in the second round of the 2017 elections by 66 percent to 34 percent.
All opinion polls suggest he will win a second five-year term.
