United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stressed that Israel’s continued occupation of the Palestinian territories poses a challenge to peace and security at the international level.

“The situation in the occupied Palestinian territories remains a challenge to international peace and security,” Guterres said in a tweet published today.

He continued: “On the day of international solidarity with the Palestinian people, let us affirm our adherence to the efforts of the Palestinians to achieve respect for their rights and build a future of peace and dignity for both Palestinians and Israelis.”

United Nations resolutions stipulate the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

But Israel still controls about 83% of the land in the West Bank, where it carries out extensive settlement activities classified as illegal by the United Nations, and the entire city of Jerusalem, which it considers its “one and eternal capital”, in addition to its siege imposed on the Gaza Strip.

The United Nations considers Israel’s control of the lands stipulated to be within the Palestinian state an occupation, while international humanitarian organizations accuse the Israeli government of continuous violations of the rights of Palestinians in all the lands under its control.
