Hemiplegia of Canadian singer Justin Bieber .. What is Ramsey-Hunt syndrome and what are its symptoms?

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — The famous Canadian singer Justin Bieber revealed, on Friday, that he suffers from paralysis on one side of his face, pointing out that he will take a break from his upcoming singing tours this summer.

And the young singer explained, in a video clip that he posted on his verified account on the “Instagram” website, that he has Ramsey-Hunt Syndrome, which makes him unable to move half his face and thus go on stage.

In the video, Bieber said that the reason was “this virus that attacks the nerves in my ear and the nerves in my face, which paralyzed my face.”

“You see, this eye doesn’t blink. I can’t smile from this side of my face; this nostril won’t move. So there’s complete paralysis on this side of my face.”

According to the Mayo Clinic website, Ramsay-Hunt syndrome arises “when the herpes zoster virus affects the facial nerve near one of your ears, and a painful rash of shingles appears. Ramsay-Hunt syndrome can cause facial paralysis and hearing loss in the affected ear…

The two main features of Ramsay-Hunt syndrome are a painful, red rash with fluid-filled blisters on, in or around one ear, and facial weakness or paralysis on the side of the affected ear.

The rash and facial paralysis usually appear at the same time. However, in some cases, one may occur before the other, or the rash may not occur at all.

Anyone who has had chickenpox can develop Ramsay-Hunt syndrome. This condition is more common in older adults and usually affects people over the age of 60, while children rarely develop the syndrome.

Ramsay-Hunt syndrome is not contagious. However, reactivation of the chickenpox zoster virus can infect people who have never had chickenpox or have been vaccinated against the disease, and the infection can be dangerous for people with immune system problems.

In the video, Bieber addressed his fans, apologizing for canceling his concerts and saying, “Physically, it seems like I’m unable to bring her back.”

He continued that the whole thing is very dangerous, adding, “You see. I hope it’s not like that, but my body is obviously telling me that I have to slow down. I hope you guys understand that. I will take this time to rest, relax and come back with all my energy so that I can carry on what I was born to do.”

Bieber thanked his fans for their patience, explaining that he does facial exercises to help him recover.

Bieber added that he does not know how long he needs to recover, but earlier this week, it was announced that three of his upcoming shows have been postponed.
