Hunting space targets .. the Russian “S-500” is coming

S-500 missiles can destroy the warheads of ballistic missiles in near space at a distance of 600 km.

  • It is expected that the “S-500” will be able to intercept the heads of missiles coming from space

The Director General of the Russian Almaz-Antey Corporation for Air Defense Products, Jan Novikov, announced the start of commercial production of the latest S-500 (Prometheus) air defense system.

He explained that “the industrial production of the S-500 system was organized using the latest achievements of national science and technology. The combat capabilities of this system significantly exceed those of previously produced air defense systems and air defense systems. It is expected that these ultra-modern systems will become the basis of Russia’s aerospace defense.” .

In an interview with the “National Defense” magazine, the Russian official stressed that these modern systems will be delivered to the Russian armed forces, with the dates specified in the country’s military orders.

The S-500 missiles can destroy the warheads of ballistic missiles in near space at a distance of 600 km.

While the “S-400” needs 9 or 10 seconds to start dealing with the target, the “S-500” completes its preparations within 3 or 4 seconds.

In order to work outside the Earth’s atmosphere, the S-500 system includes a 60K6 remote detection radar, which can find targets at a distance of 2,000 km, calculate their trajectory and send information about them to friendly anti-missiles.

Among the aircraft that the S-500 could encounter are F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters, B-2 strategic bombers, E-2 radars, and flying tanks that refuel naval aircraft in the air.

It is expected that the “S-500” will be able to simultaneously intercept the heads of missiles coming from space. It is also distinguished by its ability to integrate into the unified air defense network, along with the “S-400”, “S-300VM4” and “S-350” systems.

The distance at which these planes must move away from the Russian air defense systems has increased from 400 km to 600 km.

Russia began testing the S-500 air defense system in May 2020, then Moscow announced, in September 2021, the completion of its tests on its new S-500 system, and began supplying it to the armed forces.
