In conjunction with the World Cup, the first unified dictionary of football terms was published in Rabat | sports

lace- In conjunction with the Qatar World Cup 2022, which will be held for the first time in an Arab country, a unified dictionary of football terms was published in Rabat, prepared by the Arabization Coordination Office of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO).

This dictionary – which was presented yesterday at the headquarters of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Rabat – provides a rich terminological database in the Arabic language, covering most mathematical and specialized concepts in the field. It includes 906 entries and terms in 3 languages: English, French and Arabic, and 870 entries with accurate conceptual definitions.

The first nucleus of a football dictionary was part of the Unified Arab Dictionary of Sports Terminology project, which was presented to the Scientific Committee of the Arab Federation for Physical Education and School Sports in September 2012, on the sidelines of the 19th Arab School Sports Games that Kuwait hosted at the time.

Arabization conference

The dictionary was presented to the Arabization Conference 12 held in Khartoum in 2013, and a specialized committee comprising linguists and sports specialists from various Arab countries was assigned to revise and evaluate it in the first stage, then the work was presented in its final form to the plenary session of the conference, which approved it and agreed to publish it.

And with the organization of the World Cup for the first time in an Arab country, the Arabization Coordination Office – based in Rabat – decided to form a team to update the football volume, enrich it and review it comprehensively and completely, by adding new terms and checking all the terms included in this part in its first edition.

The director of the Arabization Coordination Office, Abdel Fattah Al-Jamri, says that the importance of this dictionary lies in its being trilingual, as it has an English entry and a French and Arabic counterpart accompanied by definitions.

Al-Jamri explained – in a statement to Al-Jazeera Net – that it is a useful dictionary for the Arabic language and other foreign languages, as it enables the researcher who works in comparative terminology to absorb lexical entries that have their importance and usefulness in the field of Arabic linguistic and linguistic research in general.

He added that the office worked hard to make this dictionary include all the international terms announced by the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA), pointing out that this version coincided with Qatar hosting the World Cup, and also with FIFA adopting the Arabic language for the first time in its various organs.

And the General Assembly of the International Federation of Football Associations decided last March to adopt Arabic as an official language of FIFA, to become the fifth language among the languages approved by the Federation, after English, French, Spanish and German.

Quality standards

For his part, Permanent Secretary of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, Abdeljalil Al-Hajmari, said that the interest in a football lexicon did not come only due to the popularity and spread of this sport in the world, but also because sport represents an opportunity to inspire global action with the aim of achieving the Millennium Development Goals for the year 2030.

He added that issuing this dictionary contributes to the development of the Arabic language and enriching its lexical field in relation to the mathematical field by finding the Arabic equivalent of the most important terms used internationally.

The Arabization Coordination Office set two criteria by which the quality of this dictionary is verified so that the largest number of interested parties can benefit from it. They are scientific accuracy and ease of use.

According to the office, it was taken into account in adjusting concepts and terminology that combine the international and Arab dimensions within the framework of what is known in the field of sports and football, especially in terms of development across the world, by making use of many international sources, references and reports to find out all the terms and expressions related to this sport.

This dictionary is used by researchers in the field of physical education and sports, teachers of physical education and school sports, and students in higher institutes for training teachers of physical education and sports, as well as technicians in the field of football, including coaches, technical managers, physical trainers, referees, and then sports journalists.

The latest lexicon publications of the Arabization Coordination Office were dictionaries in the medical field: the unified dictionary of pediatric medicine and surgery terms, the unified dictionary of internal medicine terms, the unified dictionary of Covid-19 terms, and before that a series of dictionaries in education sciences.
