In pictures – Astronauts taste hot peppers grown for the first time on the space station: did they like the taste?

Astronauts on the International Space Station were finally able to taste the chili peppers that were grown on board the spacecraft, in a first of its kind.

The pepper seeds were brought to the station in June 2021, as part of NASA’s experiment to see which foods can be grown in space. The experiment was intended to help establish potential food sources for long-term missions, possibly toward Mars.

In addition, NASA astronaut Megan MacArthur tweeted that the crew tasted the pepper, and she used it in tacos with fajita beef and vegetables. “They are the best space tacos yet,” she added.

MacArthur noted that the astronauts had to fill out a form after tasting the pepper.

And NASA had previously indicated that the crew would eat the pepper only if it seemed to be in good condition, and some of it would be returned to Earth for studies.

NASA explained that growing food in space has logistical benefits compared to bringing packaged food from Earth, and sponsoring space crops can have psychological benefits for the crew. She noted that long-distance flights, including to Mars, “may last for months or even years and have limited opportunities for resupply missions.”
