Inter Milan climbed to the top of the Italian Serie A after Lautaro Martinez scored two goals to lead his team to a big 4-0 victory over Cagliari at the San Siro stadium on Sunday.

The defending champion dominated the match from start to finish to achieve his fifth consecutive victory in the league after Argentine striker Martinez opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 29th minute.

Martinez almost doubled the score before the break, but the visitors’ goalkeeper saved his attempt with a penalty kick.

The hosts did not wait long to score the second goal, as Alexis Sanchez, in a rare participation from the start, fired a direct shot into the goal five minutes after the start of the second half.

Cagliari collapsed after that, to add Hakan Calhanoglu the third goal.

Martinez completed the quartet in the 68th minute with a perfect shot after controlling a long pass from Nicolo Barilla, while Inter missed several other opportunities that were enough to increase the goals.

Inter took advantage of Milan and Napoli’s missed points in this round to lead the competition, one point behind its neighbor Milan, while Cagliari fell to 19th place with ten points from 17 games.

The defending champions Inter, under the leadership of their new coach Simone Inzaghi, have been chasing Milan and Napoli since the start of the season in light of their unbeaten start to the season.

But with both teams in decline in the league, Inter reached their peak just before the winter break, and Cagliari could not keep up with the in-form title holder.

Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cranio was busy for most of the match, and Inter hit 15 balls inside the goal frame in 90 minutes, and his brilliance kept the score without goals for 29 minutes.

But Inter’s 14th goal from a free kick this season broke the visiting team’s resistance, as Martinez headed in the goal after a corner kick by Calhanoglu.

After Denzel Dumfries was thwarted by Cranio just before the break, Martinez looked sure to double the score, but the Cagliari keeper managed to save the penalty.

Sanchez was enjoying his rare regular start and expertly scored his first goal in Serie A this season, hitting the bottom corner of the goal.

The Chilean striker created the next goal for Calhanoglu, who fired a powerful shot into the top corner of the goal from 25 metres, before Martinez scored his second goal in the match and the tenth in the league this season to conclude the quartet.
