In its latest version of lit – lit Newsletter BloombergAccording to Mark Gorman, iOS 16 could finally include the always-on display feature for the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Once the rumors arrive with the iPhone 13 Pro, it appears that Apple’s upcoming flagship phone may get this long-awaited feature.
Gurman writes in his book the news:
“I have learned that iOS 16 will add support for the always-on lock screen in the future, something that Apple originally planned for the iPhone 13. This would allow the iPhone to significantly reduce the frame rate on the lock screen and quickly display siplay information – on Similar to the new Apple Watches.
The journalist says he was told that “Always display mode is limited to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models (…) if functionality makes a difference.
To provide some context, Back in December 2020A report indicated that an always-on mode could come thanks to the LTPO display.
“Apple plans to implement LTPO TFT on high-end iPhone models launched next year. So far, a low-temperature TFT polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) process has been used. And the oxide TFT process will be added to become LPTO TFT.
LTPO boards allow variable refresh rates. Lowering the refresh rate to a very low rate means that it uses much less power, allowing always-on display on the Apple Watch Series 5.
With the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple finally added a 120Hz panel with a refresh rate, but this varies between 10Hz and 120Hz, which is different from the Apple Watch which can also refresh the refresh rate once a minute.
The always-on display feature would also be a nice addition to the iPhone 14 Pro range, once you expect the redesign with a new punch-hole cutout + a dial to replace the notch.
Besides the Always On Display feature, the iPhone 14 Pro is rumored to have an A16 Bionic chip and a 48MP rear camera.
