The European Operation IRINI announced, on Wednesday, the seizure of the ship (MV Victory Roro), which carries the flag of Equatorial Guinea, because it violated the arms embargo on Libya.

According to Irini, the ship was taken last Monday to a European port for further procedures. She explained that this is the 24th inspection that IRINI has conducted since its launch in the spring of March 2020.

The European operation confirmed the seizure of the ship off the Libyan coast, and it was found that it was transporting vehicles to Libya in violation of the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations.

Military equipment is transferred to Libya, under the name “MV LUCCELLO”, which is flying the flag of Comoros. The ship was previously identified by the United Nations Panel of Experts on Libya as having delivered military vehicles to the country in the early spring of March 2022.

Prior to the inspection, the cargo ship was located by a French Navy aircraft, which was assigned by IRINI after entering the Mediterranean, while the Greek naval frigate HS THEMISTOKLES monitored the ship on its way before the Italian Navy frigate “ITS GRECALE” took over the inspection mission. Both warships are deployed under the operational control of Operation Irini.
