Is history science? What is the importance of history • the Yemen of tomorrow

There has been a long debate about historical writing and its place between science, art and literature, and thinkers differed on this subject, some of them argued that history knows all the meaning of that word, and some of them objected to that. He is sometimes called history as science, and sometimes as art, and he is called Ibn al-Nadim, since the branches of knowledge are arts, so opinions differed about the science of history or not.

Is history science?

Scholars differ on the matter: Is history a science? or not? Some have mentioned that history is not a science because historical facts are not subject to what every science is subject to in terms of examination, observation, testing or experimentation, and therefore it is not possible to extract specific fixed laws, as is the case in chemistry, biology and nature, for example, and this team believes that there are elements In history, it is not available in other sciences, and it is the element of chance, as well as the human personality that follows to some extent the events of history. As for the other group, it is of the opinion that if one cannot deduce strict scientific laws for the science of history as is the case for the sciences of chemistry and nature, that is not It strips it of its scientific quality and that it is sufficient to give the status of science to any subject the researcher pursues with his quest to highlight the truth and that its judgment is always critical of personal desires, and this team believes that the science of history is the science of criticism and investigation, and that the closest science is the science of geology.

History is art

Men of literature believe that history is art, and that science receives only the remnants of the past, and therefore must be surrounded by imagination, and only a skilled writer can do this. For example, the natural sciences cannot explain fire to us. To Moscow in the time of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1812 only on the basis of laws. In this, especially if there is nothing from the remnants of that fire that the natural world studies, while the historian relies on deposited documents and manuscripts.

One professor at the University of London says that history is not a science of experimentation and testing, but a science of criticism and investigation: and that the closest natural science to it is geology. It studies and explains the voluntary and emotional human factor, to come as close as possible to historical facts, and as a result we find history as a mixture of science, literature and art at the same time.

History is part of the humanities

And while there was much controversy among men of science, history and literature, especially at the end of the nineteenth century, to characterize history as a science or to deny it, it cannot be repeated in and of itself. Historical study does not lead to generalizations or scientific laws. Moreover, it is not possible to predict the course of history in the future. However, we can say that history is a human science or mental science, which studies human development in all its aspects. It cannot be compared to the natural sciences which studies a single biological, physical or mathematical phenomenon while history studies every activity, contemporary humanity and links it to its roots in the past.

The origin of the dispute is whether it is science or not

The origin of this controversy is due to the purely linguistic difference between the pronunciation of “science of history” in European languages, and due to an anomaly in English, the word “science” is limited to nature passing through observation. As long as history is not included under the term “science”, it falls under the alternative and opposite term “art-art”, which is limited to the sciences which are primarily concerned with human culture.

Therefore, the linguistic difference in the English language is due to an anomaly in it compared to the rest of the European languages. If we look at the Arabic language, we will find that there is no difference in origin between the words “art” and “science”, and that they are almost the same. Arabic: “art of the arts”; (Example: science).

The importance of history as a science

  • Helping new generations discover the civilization of their country and the countries around them, and expand their horizons to learn about the nature of the place to which they belong.
  • The study of history has become the prerogative of scholars, because it must be available in a language
The historian must have the necessary qualities and have the conditions that enable him to study and write history, so that we do not take history with any error.
  • It deals with the past life to benefit from it, in its various economic, political and social aspects.
  • The science of history aims to know man himself, it records the events of the past and explains the development that occurred in the lives of those who preceded him, and the mistakes they committed, in order to avoid them in the future.
  • History prepares for man’s fields of vast experience on which he can base his judgments.
  • It makes us understand the present in that it explains the origins of the present situation, and thus helps us move towards the future.
