It is better to live happily than to work in politics

George Clooney has ruled out politics, saying he prefers to live a “happy life” and is looking to reduce his workload.

Nevertheless, the 60-year-old actor and director spoke at length about politics in an interview with BBC correspondent Andrew Marr.

Clooney, a longtime supporter of US President Joe Biden, said the US as a country is still recovering from the damage left by former President Donald Trump.

Asked if he had any intention of running for president, Clooney quickly dismissed the idea.

He added that he plans to accept fewer projects, while still being healthy and still able to “play basketball and do what I love”.

“I turned sixty this year, and I had a conversation with my wife,” he said. We work a lot as we used to. And I said to her: We should think of these years as the golden years of life. Twenty years later I will be eighty, and that’s a real number, no matter how much you exercise, or what you eat: I’m eighty. So I said we have to make sure we enjoy and live these years in the best possible way.”

Clooney played down the decline in US President Biden’s shares in the opinion polls, and said that “Biden is still grappling with the legacy left by Trump.”

“It’s like a kid who’s been badly beaten, and you think everything will be fine on his first day of school, there are a lot of things to fix, a lot of recovery that needs to be done, and it will take time.”

He also stated that Trump is still involved in American politics, noting that he hopes Americans will have a “slightly better awareness” and not send him back to the White House.

He continued, “It’s funny, because he was nothing more than an idiot. I knew him before he became president. He was just a person running after girls. Every time he met him, you only heard a question from him: What is that girl’s name?” That’s all he thinks about.”
