A rare tornado hit a suburb of Los Angeles, California, killing 5 people, injuring another, and blowing off the roofs of a number of commercial buildings, according to ABC News.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a three-minute tornado was responsible for the chaos, and red flags were placed on 11 buildings, meaning they were uninhabitable, and six other buildings were damaged by a tornado in the south of the state.

ABC News reported that five deaths had been reported as a result of the California storms, and a spokesperson said the National Weather Service was still completing its damage report.

The flood waters resulting from the intrusion of dams in the vast and fertile San Joaquin Valley inundated farmland near Corcoran in the state, and heavy snowmelt in the mountains that surround the valley is expected to exacerbate local flooding with the advent of spring.

Lake Tulare, a body of water largely dry for more than 100 years, filled after a series of powerful storms battered California this winter.

A winter storm warning was also still in effect in the San Bernardino Mountains, where winds could gust up to 60 mph and snow could reach up to 35 meters.

Forecasters said the rest of the week should be cool and dry in Southern California, but there is a chance of more rain across the state as early as next Monday.
