WASHINGTON – (AFP) – A senior White House official announced Saturday that the United States is ready to discuss arrangements with Russia for missiles and military exercises between the two countries during bilateral talks starting Sunday evening in Geneva.
US and Russian ambassadors meet in Switzerland to defuse tensions over Ukraine, accusing US and Europe of preparing for Moscow’s new invasion of Ukraine.
“There are some areas where (…) we think progress can be made,” if the promises are “reciprocal,” a U.S. official said during a conference call.
“Russia has said it feels threatened by the deployment of missile systems attacking Ukraine … the United States has no intention of doing so,” the senior official, who did not want to be named, added. This is one area where we can come to an agreement if Russia agrees to mutual commitment.
He said Moscow had “expressed interest in discussing the future of some missile systems in Europe in accordance with the principles of the Interim Nuclear Agreement … and we are ready to discuss this.”
A senior White House official has confirmed that Washington is ready to discuss the “possibility of mutual control over the size and scope” of military exercises conducted by Russia, the United States and NATO.
But he added, “We do not know whether Russia is ready to discuss seriously and in good faith until tomorrow evening when we start these talks.” Meeting on Monday. “
“We look at these discussions realistically, not optimistically,” the source added, adding that they do not lead to “intelligence” and final obligations.
“I would not be surprised if the Russian media began to report that the United States has made all sorts of concessions to Russia,” he concluded. It will be a deliberate attempt to divide the allies by maneuver.
