American actor Johnny Depp will attend the 47th American Film Festival in Deauville in the French Normandy region, which is being held this year under the slogan “Cultural Renaissance”, organizers announced Tuesday.
Festival director Bruno Bard explained during a press conference that the organizers of the event wanted to reflect “diversity” through the works selected for participation, from studio films through to “independent works that create competition.”
American actor Johnny Depp, co-star in Brad Foreman’s “City of Lies” movie, which is being presented for the occasion in a French premiere outside the official competition, will come to Deauville in northwestern France, where the festival will be held between September 3 and 12, according to the organizers.
Johnny Depp, who made headlines in the art press in recent months because of the defamation lawsuit he lost against the British newspaper “The Sun”, which accused him of abusing his ex-wife, will meet his fans at the festival. Also in attendance will be Oliver Stone, director of a documentary about the secrets of the assassination of former US President John F. Kennedy.
The festival will witness the first screenings of eight films, including two competing for the Grand Prix of the International Jury in Deauville: “The Last Sun” by Tim Sutten and “We Are Living Things” by Antonio Tibaldi.
Also among the 13 films in competition was Michael Sarnosky’s “Big” with Nicolas Cage, which the Washington Post described as a work of “enormous beauty and depth.”
