London – (dpa):
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called on Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia to follow the example of Saudi Arabia’s neighboring United Arab Emirates and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions altogether.
After a phone call between Johnson and Prince Mohammed bin Salman, “On Monday, the Bloomberg News Agency quoted Johnson’s office.
Referring to the promises made in the Paris Climate Agreement, he said the UK was seeking “a nationally determined ambitious contribution from Saudi Arabia”.
This month, the United Arab Emirates became the first Gulf country to announce a commitment to reduce emissions to zero within its borders, and said it would invest about $ 165 billion in clean energy by 2050. Johnson is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia later this month.
Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, has been criticized for slowing down emissions. Saudi Arabia has pledged to phase out the use of oil in domestic power plants by 2030 and to generate electricity using sunlight, wind and gas.
However, for decades the Kingdom confirmed that the world needed oil.
