Lavrov: NATO activity is stoking the situation on our borders

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that NATO’s activity is exacerbating the situation near Russia’s western borders.

“We demand the implementation of international law, and military security in Europe is collapsing,” he said in a press conference on the sidelines of the foreign ministers’ meetings of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Stockholm.

He continued, “I repeat what Russian President Vladimir Putin said in his initiative about forming guarantees of non-escalation in the region, and that there should be binding legal qualities, as well as not deploying weapons on our borders, which could threaten our security,” noting that “we will work to hear NATO is our demand in order to preserve Russia’s security.”

Lavrov noted, “We are concerned about the attempt to undermine the rights of minorities and glorify the Nazis, as well as the attempt to rewrite and distort history, dictate other opinions through the media, and also close down media outlets that disagree with them.”

The Russian minister stressed that “terrorists should not cross into Europe under the guise of migrants.”

Lavrov indicated that a number of important regional and international issues were discussed and the need to solve them through diplomatic means.

He stressed “the necessity of returning to the Minsk and Normandy Quartet agreements in resolving the crisis in eastern Ukraine, and the importance of implementing the agreements with their provisions.”

“I told US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken that Kiev should agree with Lugansk and Donetsk to find a solution to the crisis,” he said.

Regarding the sanctions imposed on Russia, Lavrov stressed that “our Western partners have lost the approach of dialogue with threats,” noting that “Moscow will hold a new dialogue session with Washington at the level of experts.”

He added: “No country may seek to preserve its security at the expense of other countries.”
