Lewandowski praises Xavi’s role in his “easy” decision to join Barcelona

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski has hailed Barcelona coach Xavi as the main reason for his move from Bayern Munich, saying the former midfielder’s ideas and tactics painted a “wonderful future” for the Spanish team.

Lewandowski, who had 12 months left on his contract with Bayern, moved to Barcelona for about 45 million euros ($45.84 million) and joined the team on their pre-season tour in America.

The Poland international said he “always wanted to play for a big club” in La Liga and praised Xavi, who last season coached Barcelona when he was ninth and saved them from relegation, eventually finishing second in the standings.

“I was talking to Xavi and from the beginning I knew (what was on his mind) and his thoughts,” Lewandowski told Barcelona TV.

“It was easy for me to decide to move to Barcelona because I am the one who wants to play, who wants to win, and I think that is very possible with Xavi.

“He knows exactly how to coach Barcelona because he was a great player and now he’s also a very good coach. He has a great future and I want to be a part of that too.”

Lewandowski, winner of the last two editions of the FIFA Player of the Year award, is the second highest scorer in Bundesliga history.

Lewandowski scored 348 goals for Bayern in eight seasons, won the league title while there, and won the Champions League in 2020.

The 33-year-old had pushed Bayern Munich to agree to his departure since May and was relieved that the two clubs finally reached an agreement.

“Finally, I’m here, I’m very happy to be here with Barcelona. The last few days have been very long, but in the end it was agreed, so now I can focus on a new chapter in my life.”
