Los Angeles has become a museum of cinema

The American city of Los Angeles has finally become a museum entirely dedicated to the cinema that made its fame, a step that is timely for it, according to what actor Tom Hanks said, the day before yesterday, while briefing the media on the contents of the Academy Awards Museum before its official opening next week.

Although the city is home to Hollywood production companies and dozens of museums on everything from natural sciences to selfies, it has not yet had a museum dedicated to the seventh art. After decades of delay, the Oscar Museum will open its doors to the public on September 30.

“Having a cinema museum in Los Angeles is important,” said Hanks, who won two Oscars and is a member of the museum’s board of directors.

“We all know that films are made all over the world, and they are great,” he said. Other cities have cinema museums. But, with all due respect to her, this museum set up in Los Angeles by the Oscar Academy is supposed to be in this respect the Parthenon of cinema,” referring to the Greek temple in Athens, which is one of the best examples of ancient Greek architecture.

The museum, located in West Los Angeles, will be the largest museum dedicated to cinema in North America.

The museum was created thanks to about 390 million dollars donated by Hollywood institutions, including “Disney”, “Warner” and “Netflix”, and it was designed by the famous architect Renzo Piano, whose “Pompidou Center” in Paris is one of his most prominent works.

The building in which the museum was erected was originally a large department store in the thirties of the last century, re-designed by engineer Piano to include the main galleries of the museum, and to it was added a building in the form of a giant metal ball that appears to hover over the museum’s courtyard. This ball houses the 1,000-seat David Geffen Film Hall.

The museum provides the visitor with a broad overview of world cinema, from its beginnings at the end of the 19th century until today.
