MacBook Pro users have reported issues with the SD card reader

One of the main features of the new 2021 MacBook Pro is the return of the SD card slot. Unfortunately, some users seem to be having issues with the SD card reader on these newer devices because they reported slow transfer speeds or even inaccessible files when they tried to use the SD card on their new MacBook Pro.

As noted before Mac rumorsHowever, several reports shared across the web indicate a widespread problem with the SD card reader in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models introduced this year. There doesn’t seem to be any consistency between the reports as users say they’ve had different issues with different SD cards.

A 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro user described his experience as “extremely unstable” because the device took up to a minute to recognize the SD card and sometimes displayed an error. Another user says Finder crashes when the Mac tries to read the SD card.

It is very frustrating. I was hoping that importing from an SD card including previewing images would be fast on my new 14″ MBP. I have a fairly new 64GB SD card that works fine. But the pictures on MBP using the internal SD card slot takes a few minutes to display the pictures and sometimes gets stuck halfway. Sometimes Finder also crashes.

As other users have pointed out, formatting the SD card does not solve the problem in most cases. Some even assert that the SD card itself works with a USB-C adapter.

The only consistent thing is that if the card works, it always works, and if the card doesn’t work, it never works properly. Reformatting, even with all the other possible formats, doesn’t make any difference. SanDisk, Sony, Samsung, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, UHS-I, UHS-II, micro-SD, FAT32, exFAT, it makes no difference. 100% of my cards are working fine via the dongle.

Apple hasn’t officially acknowledged the issue yet – and so far it’s unclear if it’s a software or hardware issue. The company reportedly told some customers it was “aware of the issue” and promised to provide a software update with a fix soon.
